About project

In his long-term project Multimmersion, Aka Chang explores how light transforms our perception of space. In Multimmersion_Upside Down, he uses light in its purest form. Fine beams of light stream down from above, refracting across the water’s surface into a spectrum of colours. Solid outlines dissolve, and the surrounding space comes alive.

The still water acts as a mirror, endlessly multiplying the light and creating the illusion of infinite depth. Visitors find themselves poised between reality and its reflection – in a place where conventional perspective is quite literally turned upside down.

In keeping with the festival theme, Dream On!, the installation challenges our assumptions about what is real, opening a space for dreaming and new ways of seeing. Here, light takes on an almost tangible presence, and every reflection offers the possibility of glimpsing something beyond the boundaries of everyday experience.

Artist

Aka Chang (born 1979, Taipei) is a Taiwanese media artist whose work explores the expressive potential of light. At the beginning of his career, he focused on the relationship between music and light. Over time, however, his practice evolved towards increasingly pared-back visual compositions built around a single light source. This process of reduction has become a defining feature of his work. Through experimentation with light, smoke and a range of optical materials, Aka Chang creates distinctive new media installations and three-dimensional environments that investigate how light, sound, time and space shape human perception.

In recent years, he has produced a number of interactive audiovisual works combining different optical media, including Void Jungle, Struct by Kindling (2018), and the Multimmersion series (2017–2021). His work has also received international recognition. In 2008, Rainforest of Oslo was shortlisted for the Taipei Digital Art Awards, while June Orbs was nominated for the Kaohsiung Awards in 2020. His latest audiovisual concert, December Nite, premiered at the National Taichung Theater in April 2024.

Location

The Old Wastewater Treatment Plant in Bubeneč is one of the Czech Republic's most iconic industrial heritage sites and was designated a National Cultural Monument in 2010.

Aka Chang's installation is situated on the navigation channel Troja-Podbaba beside the iron bridge of the former industrial railway. This distinctive riveted steel bridge, built in 1902, once carried a narrow-gauge railway linking the historic treatment plant with the sludge fields on Císařský Island.

The combination of industrial heritage and water provides a striking setting for the laser installation, which harnesses the reflection and refraction of light on the water's surface.
