About project

Alcove LTD transforms an upcycled shipping container into an immersive environment of light, sound and movement. An industrial object is reimagined as a chamber of light in which visibility is constantly shifting and the boundary between interior and exterior gradually dissolves.

The installation employs liquid crystal film integrated into glass walls, allowing them to transition seamlessly between transparency and opacity. Clouds of smoke, light, shadows and abstract forms continually emerge and disappear within the space. Reflections multiply, familiar outlines lose their certainty, and the environment oscillates between openness and enclosure. Visitors may suddenly find themselves reflected in the glass, only to disappear moments later behind an opaque barrier.

In dialogue with the festival theme Dream On!, Alcove LTD explores the fragility of human perception and memory. Like images in a dream, individual scenes appear only briefly before dissolving once again.

Artist

ENCOR Studio was founded in 2016 by Swiss audiovisual artists Mirko Eremita, David Hounchinger, Manuel Oberholzer and Valerio Spoletini. The studio experiments with kinetic sculpture, architecture, installations and sound visualisation. Using mirrors, digital art, creative coding, data, water and sound waves, its artists create immersive experiences in which space and its physical properties take on new forms, transcending conventional boundaries. The studio's projects emphasise the symbolic qualities of light and sound while bringing technology into dialogue with the physicality of space. In its most recent work, ENCOR Studio has adopted a more minimalist approach, reducing visual and artistic elements to give greater prominence to the surrounding environment,

Location

Náměstí Republiky (Republic Square) occupies the site of the former moat that once separated Prague's Old Town from the New Town. Its generous open space on the edge of the medieval city centre encouraged the construction of many of Prague's most significant buildings at the turn of the twentieth century, including the Municipal House, the Powder Tower and the Hybernia Theatre. Today, the square forms a spacious pedestrian zone linking the Palladium and Kotva shopping centres. Its open layout provides the ideal setting for ENCOR Studio's installation. The mirrored audiovisual object dissolves the boundary between interior and exterior, inviting visitors to become part of its visual narrative.
