About project

This circular LED light installation combines visual light art with music to simulate a landscape of mountains and seas, reflecting the transformations of the city of Tainan over its more than 400-year history. Surrounded by mountains on one side and the ocean on the other, the city has long been shaped by a diversity of cultures. One of the most significant turning points in its history was the Dutch conquest in 1624, which dramatically altered its natural and cultural identity. In Taiwan, historical memory remains vivid, and the question of national security continues to be a pressing issue—one that this installation also addresses through its layered visual narrative.

Artist

The Peppercorns Interactive Media Art team, founded in 2016 in Taiwan, is devoted to creating digital installations using cutting-edge technologies. Their mission is to share ideas and cultivate the world through striking visuals, interactivity, and kinetics. They believe that beauty should permeate every corner of life, and with over a decade of experience in interactive design and new media, they continue to demonstrate that digital technologies can be used to create poetic, aesthetically engaging, and impactful works of art. This year’s Signal Festival features two installations by the Peppercorns studio: in addition to Tzolk’in Light, you can also see Between Mountains and Seas at Republic Square.

Location

Republic Square is situated on the site of a former moat between Prague’s Old Town and New Town. This large open space near the medieval city centre sparked the development of many significant buildings at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, including the Municipal House, the Powder Tower, and the House at Hybernals. Today, the square is a spacious pedestrian zone connecting major shopping centres such as Palladium and Kotva. This wide area provides an ideal setting and ample surrounding space for Peppercorns’ circular light installation, which can be viewed from all directions.
