About project

The Prague Market is celebrating 125 years of existence. For this occasion, Michal Škapa has created a new large neon object inspired by the statues at the entrance to the area of the Prague Market. The painting of a bull and its human guide is changeable. It is animated by the gradual switching on and off of its lights. The bull symbolizes strength and unrestrained passion. The human figure represents a torchbearer who you can easily follow to unexplored parts and boldly step out into the unknown future – just like the Prague Market, which is also currently embarking on a new journey.

The neon realization for Pražská tržnice represented an immense challenge for the artist. He has been working with the medium of neon for the past five years. You may remember his work in Atrium Žižkov for Signal Festival 2018. In his free art, Škapa often combines neon tubes with his canvasses or uses it as a solitary element in the construction of complex objects. After all, The Torchbearer is composed of no fewer than 150 neon tubes.
