About project

To the Moon is an immersive work created to mark the 50th anniversary of the first human landing on the Moon. Here, the Moon – an enduring symbol of human imagination – is transformed into a poetic landscape filled with stories and unexpected encounters.

During the fifteen-minute experience, audiences journey from Earth into a universe inspired by mythology, science and science fiction. They travel among constellations shaped like endangered and extinct species, drift through landscapes of DNA structures, encounter abandoned technological relics and discover a fossilised rose drifting through space. Here, the Moon is not a destination but a shifting landscape where science, politics, mythology, literature, and imagination converge.

In keeping with the festival theme, Dream On!, To the Moon unfolds on the boundary between reality and dreams. The work also pays tribute to an ancient Chinese painter who, according to legend, stepped into the landscape of his own completed painting. To the Moon brings this idea to life, inviting visitors to step into a world shaped by visions, memories and dreams.

Artist

Laurie Anderson (born 1947) is a New York-based multimedia artist whose practice spans visual art, composition, poetry, photography, filmmaking, performance, singing and instrumental music. Internationally recognised as a pioneer in the use of technology in the arts, she first gained worldwide attention with her landmark single O Superman (1981), followed by numerous international tours.

Her visual work has been exhibited at major museums throughout the United States and Europe. Among her most influential projects are United States I–V (1983), Empty Places (1990) and the multimedia performance Songs and Stories for Moby Dick. As a composer, she has created music for films by Wim Wenders and Jonathan Demme. In 2002, she became NASA's first Artist-in-Residence, a collaboration that culminated in her solo performance The End of the Moon (2004).

Hsin-Chien Huang (born 1966) is an acclaimed new media artist whose work combines technology with art, literature, design and theatre. His interdisciplinary projects encompass interactive installations, performance, mechanical systems, algorithmic processes and video art.

His work has been presented internationally, including at the Venice Film Festival, the Cannes Film Festival, the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York and Ars Electronica. In 2016, Huang co-founded the Taiwan Association for Virtual and Physical Media Integration. Since 2020, he has collaborated with Ars Electronica and serves as Chief Curator of Garden Taipei/Formosa, promoting Taiwanese new media art internationally.

Location

Theatre X10 was founded in 2013 by its current Artistic Director and dramaturge Lenka Havlíková together with director Ewa Zembok and actress Anna Císařovská. During its first five years, the company was based at Strašnice Theatre before relocating in 2018 to the basement of the functionalist House of Applied Arts.

Theatre X10 is dedicated to a wide range of live performance practices while bringing together artists committed to independent, critical thinking and contemporary social reflection. The company supports the creation of original theatre works that respond both to current social issues and to universal questions of human existence.
