Czech art scene at the Signal Festival

2. 10. 2023 → Signal 2023

We have already introduced the international stars of this year’s programme. Now let’s take a look at the local artists and their works they will present at this year’s Signal Festival.

Kunsthalle Prague will host an exhibition project called The Grief of Misfit Cathedrals under the direction of Lunchmeat Studio, which will capture the transformation of abandoned industrial complexes into concrete monuments of architecture through immersive film and spatial sound.

The spatial installation Axis Mundi will light up the Old Town Square, performed by Dagmar Šubrtová. She will present a reflection on the interconnection of energy sources across time and space. The author has long been concerned with the transformation of the landscape and the interconnection of post-industrial society and nature. The patron of the installation is ČEZ Group, which this year, in conjunction with EPP Pomáhej pohybem, is helping the promising athletes of the Czech Paralympic Team in their attempts to qualify for the 2024 Summer Paralympic Games in Paris. In the Church of the Holy Saviour, artists Michal Rataj and Jan Trojan will present the sound installation Immersed by the Sound, which reflects the unique ecosystems around Lipnice Castle and St. Margaret’s Church and reveals their force under the layers of technological noise. The installation will be accompanied by a scenographic realization by Dragan Stojcevski. The sound installation was created on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Czech Radio.

In his sculptural installation Irideus Bulla at the Republic Square in front of the PALLADIUM, artist
Jan Kaláb will play a game of perspective, color, light, and rhythm, offering visitors a space for their own imagination through a geometric abstraction of a precisely mathematically calculated object that appears static and solid according to the laws of physics, but in reality, behaves exactly the opposite – it pulsates, breathes, and perhaps even comes to life.

An interactive exhibition designed specifically for children’s visitors to the Signal Festival – Signal Playground: Rainbow by the Czech studio 3dsense will be presented in the Campus Hybernská space. Visitors can freely wander through the installation space, letting themselves be carried away by their own space-time and fantasy world. The installation will be accessible every day of the festival from 2 pm.

In the parking lot of the Andaz Prague hotel, the monumental designer Václav Mlynář & MONUMENT Office will present Puddles, a spatial work that generously works with basic elements such as light, water, movement, sound and space. Although it uses sophisticated materials and technologically complex solutions, it also offers the simple joy of simplicity – just as it can be observed in every small puddle.

The Museum of the City of Prague will host the Emotional memory project of the Laterna magika collective, celebrating its 65th anniversary. The performance will offer an extensive set exploring time and its cyclical nature. In collaboration with the Museum of the City of Prague, Signal Festival will also offer visitors a unique opportunity to enter the second floor of the newly renovated main building in Florence before the official opening.

Kateřina Šedá, a Czech conceptual artist who deals with social issues, will present her unique social project, an original festival route that will take you on a journey to the phenomenon of light in a different way than it has been customary for the festival so far – as a symbol of stopping, inner freedom and self-knowledge. The Pacific Prague Trail project will create a Prague version of the Pacific Crest Trail, a long-distance trail that runs through the US mountain range from the Mexican border to the Canadian border. The project will be implemented in 2024. You can follow her project on pacificpraguetrail.cz
